Reading Rock Stars Revisited/ Semester Events/ Call for Volunteers/

Welcome back families!  I hope you had a relaxing winter break.

On Friday the Media and Technology Committee met.  One of our goals for the next three months is to recognize reading at home through our Reading Rock Star Program. Each student who meets their class reading goal will be recognized monthly at WOW, and will have their names entered into a drawing for a free book. All students who meet goals will be able to participate in a reading celebration in May.

We outlined themes for the rest of the school year.

  • January is Back to School/ Back to Reading! I will share how to take part in our Reading Rock Star program with each class, and continue to discuss the importance of reading at home.  Encourage your child to record their at-home reading.  All reading logs for January must be turned in by January 25.
  • February is Love Your Library!- We will have representatives from the ACC Library speak at grade level PACTS, where I will also present on the importance of reading.  4th and 5th will continue prepping for the Battle of the Books---5th District Battle is March 19th- our school battle will take place early March.... 4th Grade Battle is April 14th.

  • March is Read Across America/Read Across Oglethorpe-  5th Grade Battle of the Books competitions will occur this month, as well as Book Fair.

  • April is Celebrate Poetry and Reading, a month of literacy celebrations/poetry readings/ poem in your pocket day--- culminating in the Dia de los Ninos/ Poetry Picnic on April 29
  • May's Theme is Read All Summer/ Read at Home.  We will have ACC Librarians meet with each grade, Reading Rock Star/ BOTB Celebrations, and other information about the importance of reading all summer at home.
Lastly, I'd love to encourage you to volunteer in the Oglethorpe Media Center.  Please contact me at sugiuchid@clarke.k12.ga.us, or feel free to just stop by.

I look forward to seeing all of you in January!  Happy reading!
