This afternoon we held a book club with several of our 4th graders discussing Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar. This is a quirky book about an unusual school that was meant to be one story high with 30 classrooms, but was mistakenly built 30 stories high with one classroom on each level. The book is divided into 30 chapters, with each one focusing on one student or teacher at the school.
We had many fun discussions with each student talking about their favorite character and why, and how they would feel if they attended a school like this. Several of the students talked about what they believe makes a good teacher and what doesn't. They were very excited to be given a chance to discuss the book in depth, and were already making plans for what book to talk about next. We have discussed other books these past few weeks such as Runaway Twin by Peg Kehret, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin, and The Borrowers by Mary Norton.
Our next book we will be discussing with 4th grade is Coyote Autumn by Bill Wallace. Our fifth graders will meet Friday to discuss the Red Pyramid. We plan to continue this as a weekly meeting with all interested students!
